E-learning generations - From e-learning 1.0 to 3.0

E-learning, is a emerging concept. E-learning generations (1.0 onwards) define new attitudes, tools and approaches from tutors and learners, as well as new technologies and new methodologies. If you bear through the initial (boring) part of the presentation and the unreadable slides (!), the speaker however moves on to give an explanation on the evolution of e-learning from version 1.0, on to 2.0 and further to 3.0.

  1. One may ask what is the next web emerging technology - web 3.0. This is also known as Semantic Web.
Web 3.0 – semantic web as the meaning (semantics) implies the meaning of information and services on the web is defined, making it possible for the web to understand and satisfy the requirements of people and machines to use the web content. The web system will be more intelligent in its search, and more personalization (e.g. iGoogle). Apparently it is being promoted with the enhancements of user’s gesture feedback, such as touch screen voice recognition, and recognizing instructions and commands through verbal communication, as to show its self-learning agent capabilities.

The objectives for Web 3.0 developers are:
    • Real time, compiled version of dynamic learning content displayed
    • Search for alternate content may start easier from a specified node in the Triple structure
    • Alternate content traced with minimum effort, as all the content nodes are well defined and traced using URIs
    • User, gesture based feed-back to a self-learning agent of a semantic inference engine automates the learning process of the system

The intent of web 3.0 will satisfy the Internet User’s Dream; computers can deliver to the user what he really needs and is searching for in the first instant. The objective is to avoid the frustration of first learning to handle the device, and to avoid the tedious work to select and get the right contents from the lot. This means that the system will ‘learn’ how to accomplish the task with less intervention from the user.

  2. To summarize the main points on web 3.0, the idea is to have the information that comes to you based on your interests rather than the user having to search. For instance the more you use the internet, the more your web browser learns about you and the less specific you will need to be with your questions.

Eventually we will be able to ask our browser open questions like "where should I go for lunch?" and the browser would consult its records of what you like and dislike, take into account your current location and come up with a list of suggested restaurants.

Coming to think of it this database of things we like/disklike is pretty much ready made up in facebook where we actively seek to 'Like' a page.
